Whitech Utility Locates

Services

Six services covering the full investigation, from the asset owner records through to a 3D clash check against your design.

How they fit together.

Most projects use several of these together, because no single method answers every question about what is underground.

What is the difference between electromagnetic locating and GPR?
Electromagnetic locating applies a signal to a conductive service and traces it from the surface. It is accurate on metallic and traceable assets but cannot detect non conductive services. Ground penetrating radar images the ground itself, so it can detect non conductive pipes, unmarked assets and buried structures, but it needs interpretation. The two are used together because each covers the other one gap.
When do I need multi-array 3D GPR rather than a standard scan?
Multi-array and traditional single-channel GPR both remain valuable tools. The most appropriate system depends on the target, access, required coverage and deliverables. Multi-array suits roads, corridors and area mapping where wide, high-density coverage is needed. Traditional GPR suits tight access and specific targets.
Do I still need a BYDA enquiry if I engage a locator?
Yes. A Before You Dig Australia enquiry is the starting point, not a substitute for locating. The plans returned vary in age and accuracy, and they do not cover private services at all. We review those plans and then test them against what is actually in the ground.
Can you locate non metallic pipes and conduit?
Often, yes. Non conductive services carry no signal, so they cannot be traced electromagnetically unless a trace wire or sonde can be introduced. Radar is the method used instead, and it detects metal, plastic, PVC, concrete and natural materials through bitumen, grass, concrete slab and many other surfaces. Detection still depends on the size of the asset, its depth and the ground conditions on the day.
How do I find out the exact depth of a service?
Depths derived from locating or radar are estimates and should be treated that way. The only way to establish a verified depth is to expose the service. Vacuum excavation lets us pothole down to the asset without damaging it, measure the depth directly and survey the position, which is AS 5488-2013 Quality Level A information.
